NORTHWEST NIGERIA— Banditry, Mass Abductions, and State Fragility

HEADLINE: Northwest Nigeria Faces Intensifying Bandit Violence and Mass Kidnappings DEK: Armed groups escalate raids, abductions, and village attacks as authorities struggle to contain a deepening security crisis.

BRIEF: The Northwest remains Nigeria’s most volatile region, with killings, kidnappings for ransom, and violent raids continuing at scale. Between July 2024 and June 2025, 2,938 people were kidnapped in the Northwest, representing over 60% of all abductions nationwide. Zamfara, Kaduna, Katsina, and Sokoto recorded the highest incidents, including attacks on mosques and rural communities. Authorities have pledged accountability but have not demonstrated meaningful progress in prosecuting perpetrators.

WHY IT MATTERS: The Northwest’s insecurity disrupts agriculture, displaces families, and undermines regional economies — conditions that disproportionately harm Black rural communities and deepen structural poverty.
